Actors You Didn’t Know Were Mormon

by

With the Mormon church seeming to be more and more in the media and political spotlight, we thought it would be interesting to look at some actors who at any time called themselves “Mormon”.

Below is a list of actors who you didn’t know were Mormon.

1.

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough started her entertainment career as a dancer—very fitting, considering her parents met while performing on the BYU ballroom dance team. Last year, she played a picture-perfect, implied-to-be-Mormon Sandy on Grease Live! Julianne is a practicing member of the LDS faith.

2.

Eliza Dushku

You might know her from Joss Whedon’s cult TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse. Eliza’s mother is Judith Dushku, an acclaimed Mormon writer and feminist. While Eliza is no longer a practicing member of the LDS faith, she does have a Mormon-inspired tattoo on her hip.

3.

Aaron Eckhart

You loved him performing opposite Tom Hanks in Sully, and he played Two-Face in the iconic Batman movie The Dark Knight. But before that, Aaron Eckhart had a traditional Mormon upbringing: he served a two-year mission in France and Switzerland, then graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from BYU. While he’s not a practicing Mormon anymore, he has recently quit smoking, drinking, and partying.

4.

Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling is another of those who was raised LDS and left the church later in life. But his roots are strong—you can even watch him performing in a Mormon talent show in the video below.  Keep an eye out for him later this year in Blade Runner 2049.

5.

Amy Adams

We loved her as the clueless Disney princess Giselle, and loved her even more in her incredible recent movies like Arrival and Nocturnal Animals. Though she credits the LDS faith for her “sunny disposition,” Amy Adams and her family left the church when she was 11 years old. This November, we’ll get to see her reprise her role as Lois Lane in Justice League. We’re still hoping for that Oscar, Amy.

6.

Paul Walker

The “Fast and the Furious” franchise has grossed over $5 Billion worldwide, but not many know that the lead actor grew up Mormon. Paul Walker grew up in a strong Mormon family and started acting when he was a toddler (diaper commercials). He starred in over 40 featured films and has won several awards before his death in 2013. Although he grew up LDS in his adult life he no longer practiced and had talked about attending a non-denominational church.

So, Paul Walker is dead. And he has been for a few years. You might want to update the phrasing in his post.

I think it’s sort of silly to mention those who are no longer mormon… Because they are no longer “mormon actors”
